A thorough discussion of self-confidence cannot be complete without exploring our own sense of determination, and how we motivate ourselves. Our confidence and determination are often interdependent; feeling good about ourselves has a lot to do with our ability to strive for and accomplish things, and in order to have the determination to do something, we usually need at least a hint of confidence and self-acceptance to get – or stay – inspired.
Self-determination is so many things. It’s about how we take control of our own lives, express ourselves, be accountable, and pursue our own course of action. It’s our determination, or grit, that propels us to become personally motivated to improve our lives in small or big ways. When we break away from an unhealthy relationship, find a better job, or finally stick to a fitness regime, it’s because we knew the value in it, despite the risks, hurdles and emotional or physical impacts. We’re amazing creatures, don’t you agree?
Let’s explore a little more about our inner determination and the ways we can restore it or improve upon it:
Express easily
When we clearly envision and articulate our ambitions, values, and what we’re passionate about, then we help to solidify our goals and move closer towards them. We also see more resources and opportunities open up for us when we fill our minds with a clear picture of that which we’re passionate about and that which we want to become a reality. Things tend to unfold for us in positive ways, and sometimes our determination and energy is infectious!
Get gritty & take risks
Life is meant to be a grand adventure. It’s just better when we’ve gotten a little dirty, tried new things, loved and lost. For each and every one of us, how we define risks will vary, but what’s important is that we get out of our comfort zones to pursue what we really want out of life. We need determination to do that.
Be fearlessly focused
It’s hard not to give up when things aren’t working out, or when we feel like we’re out of options. Harnessing the power of our inner determination helps us to stay focused in those moments and renew the passion we have for whatever it is we’re trying to accomplish. Distractions and obstacles are a part of life; it’s our job to be flexible, deal with them and not make excuses.
Put a pause on people-pleasing
When it comes to those who stand in the way of us being able to accomplish our goals or dreams, we don’t have to give in to the negative energy or demands of others. It’s not only OK to put our needs first from time to time, it’s advisable! If our determination gets squashed because we’re always trying to please others, then we have no one to blame but ourselves. We need to recognize that the people who love us want us to succeed and be happy, and if they don’t…then that’s a problem, which leads me to the next point:
Take control of our own lives
As adults, we have to make our own choices and decisions, even when others may disagree; it’s up to us to assume authority and think like an owner – we are accountable for our own decisions. Naturally, when we are in a relationship or have children, we make concessions, but we compromise for the right reasons: compassion, caring and commitment.
Design our own journey
Finally, being determined enough to pursue our own course, and act according to our own personal values is what I like to call ‘life design’. To find more meaning in life, and from life, we need to design our journey and make it a reality. To do this, we need to believe in ourselves, even if just a little, and stay determined. Just imagine what we can accomplish – the possibilities are endless!
I know that life gets hard, and that we can get bogged down with responsibilities, financial pressures, health concerns and a million other worries. We all can use a little cheerleading and support to help us find the confidence to not just get through life, but to live it more fully. That’s what I’m determined to do, and I’m here to give you that extra nudge – that we all need – to take a more proactive and determined approach in living life to the absolute fullest.
“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” – Dale Carnegie
